What size rug do I need?

The most common rug mistake is buying too small. Use these rules to pick a size that anchors the room, then try the calculator.

The rules, room by room

Living room

Aim for a rug large enough that at least the front legs of every seat sit on it. In a larger room, put all the legs on the rug. Leave roughly 12 to 18 inches of bare floor around the edges. An 8×10 is the most common choice for a standard living room, and a 9×12 suits a large open space. A 5×8 works only for a small seating area.

Dining room

The rug should extend at least 24 inches past every edge of the table, so chairs stay on the rug when someone pulls them out. Add 48 inches to the table's length and to its width. A 72 × 36 inch table needs a rug of at least 120 × 84 inches, which means an 8×10 in practice.

Bedroom

Place the rug under the lower two thirds of the bed, extending 18 to 24 inches out on both sides and at the foot. A queen bed usually takes an 8×10. A king takes a 9×12, or an 8×10 if the room is tight.

Hallways and entries

Leave 4 to 6 inches of bare floor on each side of a runner and a few inches at each end. Measure the space before you shop, since runners come in fixed lengths.
